Today is one of those rare days. As required by state regulation, we build in
three “inclement weather days” into the school calendar each year. We use these days to cover any lost time for
bad weather (or other things that may close school).
Last year we used all three days (and still had to be “forgiven”
for additional time by the SC General Assembly so as not to extend the school
year).
This year’s weather has been unusual, and we haven’t had to
use any of the days at this point. As a
result, students and teachers have a rare Monday holiday today. In fact, this was a four-day weekend for many
in the school system (students, bus drivers, etc.). Friday was one of our winter in-service
days.
If these weather trends continue, students will have another
four day weekend in March (March 16-19) and an extra Monday during our Spring
Break (March 31-April 9).
As a student I remember that it was always exciting to have
a day off when snow covered the ground.
I guess these extra-long weekends and breaks will have to do in the
absence of snow.
