Congratulations to our newest high school graduates …

Yesterday there were four new high school graduates from Oconee County. These students were among seven students who received high school diplomas from the Gateway to College program at Tri-County Technical College. The Gateway to College program is a cooperative venture between the seven school districts in Anderson (5 school districts), Oconee and Pickens counties and the technical college.

Gateway students work on their high school diploma and take courses toward a degree at Tri-County Technical College. Plans for the program started about eight years ago when these students were youngsters in elementary school. We’ve had several graduates complete the program from our school district.

The graduation was touching with remarks by Dr. Ronnie Booth of Tri-County Technical College, and then there was a luncheon for the graduates and their guests. The awards component would bring tears to your eyes. The students awarded and paid tribute to individuals who helped them make it through the challenges they’ve faced in life to reach the goal of receiving their high school diploma.

I was so proud of these students, and I join their schools (Seneca High and West-Oak High) in congratulating them on reaching one of life’s important milestones.
